Zulus

3 explorers are shipwrecked on a desert island with 3 Zulu warriors. All are starving & must get back to the mainland for food. the Zulus would like to eat the explorers, but as long as there are 3 each, the explorers are safe. As long as they keep an equal division of numbers the explorers are safe. There is 1 boat & 1 pair of oars which carries only 2 people at a time. All explorers can row, but only 1 Zulu can row. The problem is for all the explorers to reach the mainland in the only boat on hand without leaving any of them out numbered by the Zulus at any time; that is, 1 explorer must not be left with 2 Zulus, nor 2 explorers with 3 Zulus on either side of the water.
Thanks

Boat trip 1 has 2 Zulus

Boat trip 1 has 2 Zulus leaving 3 explorers + 1 Zulu on shore Boat trip 2 has 1 explorer + 1 zulu leaving 2 explorers + 1 Zulu on shore Boat trip 3 has 1 explorer + 1 zulu leaving 1 explorer + 1 Zulu on shore Boat trip 4 has 1 explorer + 1 zulu leaving 1 Zulu on shore The last boat trip carries 2 Zulus The trick is that one Zulu has to row back to the island each time, the explorers would have to row to the mainland. I hope this helps. You could actually make objects represent your people and work it out physically.
