Here is the answer to your query
The end of the Civil War finally came on April 9, 1865, in a small town in Virginia called Appomattox Courthouse. General Robert E. Lee had 30,000 soldiers with him, but they were worn out and unfit for battle. The Union troops were all around him and were ready to make a final, crushing assault on Lee's front. Out between the lines came a Confederate horseman carrying a white flag. The soldiers on both sides could hardly believe that the fighting was finally over.SURRENDER AT APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE
So General Robert E. Lee met with General Ulysses S. Grant in a private home at Appomattox Courthouse and surrendered his army. For four long years the Confederate Army had been unconquerable, but by now even Lee realized that it was finally over. General Grant wrote the terms of surrender and told Lee's men to lay down their arms and go home. Thus ended the American Civil War - a bloody period in our nation's history.
Hope this helps
