We have two methods one is direct substitution of value of y and solving it for x other is graphical method
Method 1
Putting y=5
5 = -1/2 x+3
Subtracting 3 from both sides
2= -1/2 x
or x = -4
Method 2
Second method it to draw the graph and , just note the value of x corresponding to y =5
I have drawn the graph , just see the value of x at y=5 , its -4
